Gallery Asha Selling Remaining Inventory

Gallery Asha in Los Angeles, an importer of African textiles, is closing its doors and selling off its remaining inventory.

Owner Julie Ward said she has hundreds of fabric pieces remaining—including wax prints from the Ivory Coast, kuba cloth from the Republic of Congo and hand-dyed Mauritanian fabrics, as well as Peruvian tapestries and suzani fabrics from Uzbekistan—and everything is “priced to move.”

The company’s fabrics, which originally were priced from $10 to $20 per yard, are priced from $5 to $12. Pieces range from
5 yards to 12 yards.

She also has men’s and women’s clothing made in her fabrics for sale—including shirts, T-shirts, dresses and accessories—as well as jewelry.

Ward plans to remain in the industry—and hopes to parlay her knowledge of the African textile-import market into her next position.

“Closing my business is bittersweet,” she said. “I can place orders for certain fabrics, but, as a whole, my textile business is closed. I have an extensive network within Africa, and with my expertise doing business in Africa, I look forward to offering my services to other companies that want to manufacture in or import from various countries on the continent. There are still many great partnerships that can be developed.”
