Thursday Friday, Everyday Totes
You can tell that the two friends behind Thursday Friday bags, Roni Brunn and Olena Sholomytska are smart. Not only are the canvas tote bags clever (printed with trompe-l’oeil images of iconic designer satchels), they can also articulate their origin story with succinct, thoughtful depth. And Roni used to run a Math Club. Yes, like a book club, but about math.
“I love the concept of cultural reappropriation,” says Roni about where the idea for the trompe-l’oeil bags began.
“I screen printed my indie band From's logo over Black Sabbath concert T’s and stenciled the logo over Paul McCartney CD booklets… The Together bag is the fashion manifestation of the same concept. Olena and I were using simple grocery canvas totes to accompany our "real" bags, and I wanted to have fun with this idea that the simple canvas bag can have some fun with iconic luxury bags… It's a classic high-low joke that turns these images of status symbols into a rebellious statement against consumerism.”
Their newest prank is on luxury travel trunks and those silk scarves depicting tassles and leopards, available in a family of different size totes.
“Steamer trunks used to symbolize luxury in the Victorian era and have stayed as a somewhat bourgeois symbol of either vintage whimsy or douchey private jet setting. So they're already funny, plus they're beautiful. We also benefit from taking these heavy, impractical objects and turning them into easy, light bags,” says Roni.
