The election took place after NCTO merged on April 1 with the National Textile Association and the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition. The merger brought various textile organizations under one roof to have a more effective influence on Washington policies.

The National Textile Association was founded in 1854 as a cotton-spinners association in Massachusetts. After various transitions, the organization in 2012 was named the National Textile Association. It represented 33 textile companies and their suppliers as well as 21 companies under the American Flock Association.

The American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition was formed in 2012 by Roger Milliken of Milliken and Co. and represented 21 textile and other manufacturing companies in the Southeast and the Midwest.

NCTO was formed in 2004, replacing the American Textile Manufacturers Institute. At the time, it represented 84 textile companies and their suppliers.
