London’s exclusive Royal School Department of Fashion Design is joining Woodbury University for an elite event where the Royal School of Needlework’s Senior Tutor, Anne Butcher, will lead a lecture on the school’s history, as well its novelty techniques.

Woodbury University attendees will receive an educational lesson on “ancient needlework” practices in addition to identifying the differences between machine embroidery and skillful hand embroidery, including the craftsmanship that goes into the art of needlework.

The event, which will be held at the campus’s Fletcher Jones Auditorium on Monday, May 13, will include an introduction to the RSN Studio, where dialogue and commissions by distinguished figures, such as the Royal Family will take place.

Works including Kate Middleton’s wedding dress that is said to have lace appliqué was hand-stitched by a RSN team. Stated in the press release, “U.K.’s “Daily Mail" [mentions] the lace, which employed the Carrickmacross technique, was so intricate and perfectly sewn that it took about one hour to sew an inch of the lace.”

At the lecture, guests will have the opportunity to examine RSN’s pieces and view handcrafted needlework which has become rare with the rise of technology. Hopefully students will gain a renewed respect for the craft and learn how to incorporate it in their own designs.
