Sullen Clothing: Tattoo You!

Tattoo fashion is still making a splash.

In fact, it’s going gallery.

Sullen Art Collective, established by Sullen Clothing of Los Alamitos, Calif., will be producing the Inked Up Tour Wrap Party and Group Show Dec. 7 at Known Gallery on Fairfax Avenue, which has become the Mecca of streetwear fashion.

Tattoo artists Mike Chambers, Bob Tyrell, Shawn Barber, Moni Marino, Camila Rocha, Robert Atkinson,Nikko Hurtado, Oliver Peck, Carlos Torres, Jack Hernandez, Jack Rudy and Norm, who goes by a single name, will be showing some of their work at the Inked Up Tour Wrap Party and Group Show.

These ink & needle artists, based in different parts of the U.S., are some of the best, said Ryan Smith, co-founder and creative director for Sullen Clothing and the Sullen Art Collective. One of the reasons for the Inked Up tour was to find and showcase the Picassos of the tattoo world. The tour was produced in partnership with Rockstar Energy Drink and Tattoo magazine. At the gallery show, action sports breast cancer awareness group Keep A Breast Foundation will exhibit plaster casts of breasts of various tattoo and action sports celebs.

If this sounds like a happy event produced by a group which defines itself as sullen, Smith wanted to make it known that his company is not staffed by sulking people. Rather, the word “sullen” was picked to represent the brand because the Sullen staff liked the way the word sounded, and liked the way it appeared on T-shirts. And yes, they liked they way it looked on skin.
