First Look at DTLA Ace Hotel

Fashion District denizens have been long anticipating the debut of the Ace Hotel at 929 S. Broadway, and on Jan. 6, the newest location in the hipster hotel chain had a soft opening.

Welcoming a trickle of passersby with free coffee drinks, the new hotel, housed in a 1927 United Artists building, ushered visitors into an Ace world that seemed wonderful, and a bit weird. Some lobby walls were covered in shearling materials. Other surfaces featured pencil caricatures of historic L.A. notables such as Former Mayor Tom Bradley and Comedian Bob Hope.

After checking out a lobby store merchandised with Ace hotel baseball jackets and caps, I sipped a cappuccino at the Ace’s L.A. Chapter café, then I went up to the Mezzanine bar which serves mixed drinks with great names such as Tijuana Bible and Roses in Winter. We’ll have to wait until Feb. 15 when the hotel’s theater will open with a concert by UK psychedelic band Spiritualized.

Long time fashion district watchers had high hopes for the Ace. “This is the first time where we had a place for people to stay,” said Kent Smith, executive director for the L.A. Fashion District Business Improvement District. “It will be really positive for all of the trade shows. Buyers can come, and they don’t have to leave the district when they finish their business. It will bring to life a block of the district that has been really quiet for a couple of decades.”

Here's a look at what's inside the new Ace.
