T-shirts Designed by West Africans for American Apparel

American Apparel has joined forces with a group of artisans from Sierra Leone who have designed a limited edition T-shirt collection for the Los Angeles company.

The idea behind the collection came from Massah KaiKai, a New York-based woman who wanted to help her homeland with a collaboration with the giant clothing manufacturer. She approached American Apparel about working with artisans in the West African country.

Thousands of American Apparel T-shirts were shipped from Los Angeles to Sierra Leone where a group of artisans were recruited to tie-dye a collection that is now selling at 50 American Apparel stores in the United States and online at the American Apparel website.

The T-shirts sell for $25 - with 50 percent of sales benefiting the artisans in Sierra Leone.

"I hope Sierra Leoneans are inspired by what we've done in partnership with American Apparel to showcase this talented community," KaiKai said.
