LA Opera Costumes for Sale

This is an opportunity that doesn't happen very often. In fact, it has taken place only two times before.

Los Angeles Opera is moving its vast costumes shop from a site in downtown Los Angeles, 330 S. Alameda St., to a location closer to the opera's home at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

So, this Saturday, March 28, the opera is holding a sale that includes costumes from a number of its productions.

More than 1,000 costumes on 90 clothing racks will be wheeled out to the parking lot and put on sale alongside tables of one-of-a-kind items such as handcrafted hats, uniquely designed shoes, numerous masks, theatrical jewelry, period wigs, gladiatorial armor and even slave cuffs. Also for sale will be bolts of unusual fabrics and faux fur, as well as buttons, belts, floral hair pins, bustles and panniers.

Costumes available for sale will include items from "Aida", "The Barber of Seville", "The Birds," "Cinderella," "The Grand Duchess," "Lucia di Lammermoor," "The Turn of the Screw," among others.

Prices range from $25 through $650 for complete costumes with individual costume pieces and accessories available at prices ranging from $2 to $20 at the bargain table. There will also be a special “Diva Rack” of signature costumes worn by superstars including Plácido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Frederica von Stade, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Jennifer Larmore, Bryn Terfel and Deborah Voigt, priced from $1,000 to $5,000.

The sale begins at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at 330 S. Alameda St. and ends at 4 p.m.
