Avery Dennison recently invited a group of students from the Student Veterans of American (SVA) chapter at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising for an afternoon tour and workshop at its downtown Los Angeles facility.

FIDM’s SVA chapter includes veteran students and supporters as well as children of military families. The group, who toured Avery Dennison’s Los Angeles Customer Design Innovation Center, included 10 veterans from the Army, Marines and Navy.

“There’s a common bond between vets, military families and supporters that transcends the various branches of the Armed Forces, and it was great to see them come together in such a collaborative environment,” said Charlie Brown, Avery Dennison’s director of Product Line Management Core Branding Solutions, who is also a veteran.

The SVA group toured Avery Dennison’s Performance and Permanent Branding room, where Brown walked them through RBIS solutions such as heat-transfer labels and other external embellishments. The group also had a chance to see how customers and RBIS team members collaborate on labeling solutions.

“The FIDM visit to the Avery Dennison Customer Design and Innovation Center provided our student veterans the wonderful experience of learning first hand from a successful veteran in the industry,” said Barbara Bundy, FIDM vice president of education. “It’s always a great opportunity for our students to be able to bridge the gap between their education and the local Los Angeles design community.”
