Forget the bulky silver spacesuits. A group of European fashion school students have a new take on the future of space fashion

Students from design schools in the United Kingdom. France, Italy, Denmark and Germany participated in Couture in Orbit, a program developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and London’s Science Museum.

The students developed “desirable and practical” fashion made from “space-certified textiles” provided by ESA.

Participating schools included Ravensbourne in the United Kingdom, Fashion Akademiet in Denmark, the Politecnico di Milan in Italy and the International University of Art for Fashion in Germany and France.

The fabrics from companies such as Bionic Yarn and Sympatex, featured special properties such as embedded sensors, heating units and super-absorbency.

A panel of judges selected 15 pieces for a runway show, held on May 25 at the Science Museum in London.
