Cops Bust Lingerie Thief

Los Angeles Police Department arrested Carlos Olivas Sept. 28, they charged him with burglarizing a string of lingerie boutiques in the San Fernando Valley.

The police allege that Olivas burglarized 11 lingerie boutiques, and had been reselling the intimate apparel, Det. Merrill Dunn said. “His penchant for breaking into lingerie shops told us this was a matter of organized retail crime,” he said.

Police believe that the burglaries resulted in more than $10,000 in losses, a sum which does not include damage from smashing glass windows and doors to break into the shops.

Also on Sept. 28, LAPD arrested a man for burglarizing the Hollister Co. store at Westfield Topanga retail center. Capt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of the LAPD’s Topanga Patrol Division, said that the arrests focused a spotlight on organized retail crime. It is a major problem that results in $30 billion in losses each year. “It’s a problem much bigger and more sinister than just simply shoplifting a sweater,” Vernon said.
