American Apparel Expands Cosmetics Offerings

First T-shirts, then underwear, then denim and now cosmetics. Los Angeles–based American Apparel followed up the launch of nail polish under the American Apparel brand with a collection of American Apparel lip gloss.

Available in nine shades including “Legalize LA” (a bright red) and “Pantytime” (an apricot pink).

“These are colors for everyone,” said Marsha Brady, a creative director for American Apparel. “Over the last few months of color trials, employees were eager to see them and try them on, so we got to see how they performed on many different complexions. We’re really happy with how pretty and natural they look on everyone.”

The petroleum-, fragrance-, mineral oil– and cruelty-free gloss is made by a Los Angeles–based vertically integrated family-owned business, according to American Apparel.

“We’re excited about our growing beauty category,” said Dov Charney, chief executive officer and founder of American Apparel. “It’s been a dream for many of us here to offer a modern, sexy, high-quality cosmetic line with the same manufacturing principles we use for our made-in-USA cotton basics, and we’ve done that here.”—Alison A.
