The scene: Sue Wong spent the last four years restoring her Los Feliz–area home, The Cedars, to its original 1920s splendor. For Los Angeles Fashion Week, the designer hosted a 1920s-themed party and fashion presentation in her home.

The Los Angeles fashion community turned out in fancy dress for the party, which featured Marie McGillis singing jazz-age standards and Maxwell DeMille acting as emcee. Patina Catering provided the hors d’oeuvres and, while there was no bathtub gin, there were plenty of people bellying up to the bar for highballs.

Models in Sue Wong finery mingled with the guests, who wandered around the historic house taking in its opulent restoration. Each room featured a mannequin dressed in a Sue Wong ensemble so perfectly coordinated with the décor that it seemed to be a permanent part of the room’s art. The 2008 collection was divided into themes named for classic Hollywood stars such as Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard, Gene Tierney, Theda Bara, Pola Negri, Clara Bow and Norma Talmadge.

The 10,000-square-foot estate was built in 1926 for French film director Marcel Tourner and was designed to resemble a 17th-century Venetian palazzo.

The house has had a slew of famous tenants over the years, including Talmadge, Howard Hughes, Errol Flynn, Ralph Bellamy, Bela Lugosi, Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Dennis Hopper, Lou Reed and Johnny Depp.

The party was co-hosted by IDG World Expo, which announced plans to kick off a biannual fashion event called Reveal L.A. in Los Angeles in 2009. (IDG is a producer of trade shows and consumer events, including Macworld Conference & Expo, E3 Media & Business Summit, Entertainment For All, GreenXchange Xpo, LinuxWorld Conference & Expo and Next Generation Data Center.) The event—which will be held at the California Market Center, L.A. Live and other downtown venues—will include a designer marketplace, fashion presentations and other events to spotlight Los Angeles’ design community.  Alison A. Nieder
