Shopping and the Scene at the US Open of Surfing

The US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Calif., had lots of stuff happening: outdoor concerts; a runway walk-off competition; brands doling out freebies; and big-name pro riders, whose aerial achievements have been documented on the cover of skater, surfer and bmx biker magazines and who could be seen live in the flesh.

I beat the big crowds that flooded the pier gates over the weekend (the event ran from July 31 to Aug. 8) by checking out the scene on Friday morning. Between sunning on the beach while watching the surf competition heats, visitors shopped and socialized while wearing their brand loyalties on their bare bodies.

Sponsors Hurley, Converse and Nike 6.0 set up a retail shop selling enough to outfit the whole family in new togs for a day at the beach. The hot ticket was the official T-shirts that came in cute V-neck, tank and crew neck. photo by California Apparel News

This fellow avoided being too buttoned up by cutting off the collar of his HM shirt, worn with vintage shorts and Toms shoes.

The young ones were stoked on showing their brand loyalty all over their bodies. Brands such as Skullcandy, Tilly's and ...Lost (shown here) spray-painted temporary tattoos using a stencil on the tanned bare flesh of guests. photo by California Apparel News
