Less than two miles north of the Knott’s Berry Farm amusement park in Buena Park, Calif., Source at Beach, a new entertainment/retail center, is being constructed and will open in Spring 2014.

The property is being developed by M&D Properties, which is best known for the Plaza Mexico, a Latino-oriented retail center in Lynwood, Calif. The Source is described as a 450,000-square-foot mall meant to attract Buena Park locals along with tourists and consumers from outside the area, said Katie Wanamaker, M&D’s vice president of property management.

More than one-third of the Source will be devoted to fashion retail, she said. The property also will be the address for a Hyatt Place business hotel and office space. The hotel and offices will be completed in 2015.

Architecture firm NBBJ, which maintains an office in Los Angeles, will design a unique look for the Source. The mall’s design will offer the urbane, high-energy ambiance of Manhattan’s SoHo district and the LED screens of Times Square, as well as the tiny alleys and avant-garde architecture of Seoul’s Myong-Dong district, according to Jonathan Ward, the project’s principal architect.—Andrew Asch
