...LARGE TIDAL FLUCTUATIONS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS KING TIDES ARE
EXPECTED TO RETURN ON NEW YEAR`S DAY...
...COASTAL FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH
TUESDAY AFTERNOON...
The National Weather Service in San Francisco has issued a
Coastal Flood Watch, which is in effect from Monday morning
through Tuesday afternoon.
The sun, moon, and earth are approaching proper alignment to
encourage large tidal fluctuations that are expected to occur
Monday and Tuesday January 1st and 2nd. These extreme tides --
often referred to as King Tides -- will result in coastal flooding
of low-lying areas along the coastline and bay fronts during
periods of high tide. Locations that are typically dry during high
tide may consequently become submerged due to this extreme tidal
cycle. During periods of extreme low tide, expect to see tide
pools develop along the immediate coast.
* TIMING...Extreme high tides are expected to occur during the
early to middle morning hours of January 1st and 2nd. Extreme
low tide will occur during the late afternoon and evening hours.
The exact height and timing of the tides will vary from location
to location; please visit http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/ports
for location-specific tidal predictions.
* LOCATION...Low-lying areas along the immediate coast, bay
fronts, marshes, and sloughs. These locations may also include
parking lots, coastal trails, sidewalks, underpasses, and even
roadways that are not ordinarily affected by the tides.
* IMPACTS...Sea water on roadways, parking lots, trails, and
sidewalks. Beachgoers may lose entry and exit paths to coves
and narrow beaches during high tides
