Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall 2001: Rojas

Who else but Freddie Rojas could make a T-shirt with the words “I’m The Biggest Piece Of Trailer Park Trash!” written on it appear chic?

For Fall 2001, Rojas not only found inspiration in white trash glamour (his ode to the World Wresting Federation), he embraced it.

“I went really trailer trash and I did this whole WWF group,” said Rojas.“It’s so American. It’s fun.”

Rojas’s fashion senses had guests marveling at his ability to poke fun at WWF fans on March 30, when he staged his runway show at his own X Boutique store on Melrose Avenue.

The show started off with a punked-out group where houndstooth Lurex suiting, graffitied denim and dazzled-up lace tops defined the term neo-pirate.

Next was his crowd-pleasing WWF group which sported sarcastic (or maybe not), cut-up WWF T-shirts, more graffitied denim—this time, chain silhouetted in gold spray paint around the waist—and, my personal favorite, a WWF mini-dress with the word “Maniac” silhouetted in spray paint on the rear end.

Rojas finished the show with a black and white velveteen tuxedo group adorned with his signature effects.

The season is “going to be about black and white,” the designer said. “I just wanted to accent it with a little pink and electric blue—some ’80s and neon.”

His fluorescent graffiti accents are just an example of the things we’ve come to count on when it comes to Rojas’ lighthearted design attitude and approach.

“It’s the quirkiness in me,” Rojas said, with a big smile. “The line’s kind of quirky. It’s got a little tiny twist that sayshellip;O.K., that’s Rojas.”—Joselle Yokogawa, Fashion Editor
