African Contractors to Show at Cal Mart

The Sub-Saharan Africa Apparel Exhibition, SAATEX 2001, will host its first global sourcing show on May 31–June 2 at the California Mart before heading on to New York for a similar exhibition on June 5 and 6.

The Mauritius Industrial Development Authority (MIDI), an organization that promotes exporting, organized the events. Approximately 30 apparel contractors from Mauritius will participate in the show, which is the first of its kind in Southern California since the passage of the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) and the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The joint legislation, which was passed last year, provides for the elimination of duties and quotas on apparel that is manufactured in the Caribbean and Sub-Saharan countries under certain conditions, such as apparel manufactured from U.S.-made fabric and yarn.
