L.A. Designers Group Heads to New York

A contingent of Los Angeles designers will head to New York for the 7th on Sixth fashion shows as part of Design Collections of Los Angeles, which is sponsored by automobile maker Audi and organized by Los Angeles public relations firm SPR. The collections will be presented on the West Coast during Los Angeles market week in November.

The designers include Michelle Mason, Magda Berliner, Alicia Lawhon, Jared Gold and Grey Ant. Each will hold a solo show in a separate location. This will mark the first New York show for Mason, Lawhon and Grey Ant designer Grant Krajecki. Gold has shown in New York as part of Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion shows. Berliner held a small runway show in New York this past spring.

SPR founders Sara Stein and Margaret Schell said that they hope the event will help spur recent efforts to create an official Los Angeles Fashion Week. Both have participated in recent meetings to organize a full-scale fashion week in Los Angeles (for more information, see the California Apparel News Web site, www.apparelnews.net.)

“We feel the best way to get the ball rolling is to promote it to New York,” said Stein.

The duo said that each of the Design Collections of Los Angeles shows in November would be a “grand-scale” event. Audi will be sponsoring those shows as well.

“It’s all [being done] to put a spotlight on Los Angeles talent, and ultimately it will help build excitement for L.A.,” Schell said. —Alison A. Nieder
