Video Inspiration at Trade-Tech

Student designers fused music with fashion at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College’s “Fashion Center Video Awards”–themed Gold Thimble Fashion show, held Dec. 14 in the college’s Grand Theater on its campus near downtown Los Angeles.

Over 1,100 guests attended the event, which recognized student designers’ achievements in several categories, including active sportswear, childrenswear, suits, coordinated sportswear for men and women, after-five traditional and clubwear, and eveningwear.

The show’s main theme, however, was music-video costuming by the design department’s senior class.

The show kicked off with video footageshowing of Jimi Hendrix’s 1969 Woodstock festival rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” while a male model dressed in a colonial-style velvet jacket, ruffle shirt and denim pants walked down the runway. Costuming for several other music videos followed, including an updated multi-layered peasant dress for a Tori Amos video and an artfully crafted Alfons Mucha–inspired Art Nouveau dress with butterfly wings for a video for the film “Moulin Rouge.”

Winners of this year’s Gold Thimble awards, which were presented by associate dean of fashion design Leslee Koritzke, were Cecilia Sanchez, childrenswear; Jennifer Flores, menswear; Melissa Morales, coordinated sportswear; Jhen Wang, businesswear; Bendue Parker, after-five traditional; Gerardo Reyes and Paul Fan, after-five clubwear; Amelia Custudio and Rio Knott, eveningwear; and Paul Fan and Gerardo Reyes, music video.

Proceeds from the program went to the school’s design department. —Claudia Figueroa
