Vodka Latka

On Dec. 13 at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theater, the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles held its third annual Vodka Latka party, a Hanukkah celebration featuring a fashion show offering pieces from Coalition of Los Angeles Designers members that was coordinated by Sharon Segal of Fred Segal. The event also served as a toy drive for Vista Del Mar Child and Family Care Services and as a fundraiser for the Jewish Federation’s beneficiary agencies that deal with sectarian and nonsectarian responses to addiction.

Security for the event resembled current airport security measures, complete with a metal detector gateway and publicity escorts for press to gain access to the theater and mingle with the likes of David Schwimmer, Joey Slotnick and Sheila E.

The traditional fare for Vodka Latka celebrations was served, consisting of vodka as a libation and a variety of latkas—fried potato pancakes—dressed and served as hors d’oeuvres. The crowd was also treated to a variety of desserts and finger foods while waiting for the festivities to begin.

The fashion show and musical performance by Sheila E’s band was preceded by the lighting of a menorah, the candle-filled symbol of Hanukkah.

The Jewish Federation is the second largest fundraising organization in Los Angeles, raising more than $42 million annually. Vodka Latka was hosted by a combination of the Federation’s Entertainment, Fashion and Access (its young adult arm) divisions. —Darryl James
