More than 41,000 employees were laid off or dismissed by Internet companies in 2000, according to Challenger Gray & Christmas, a Chicago-based outplacement firm, with most of the cuts coming in the second half of the year and almost a full quarter of the cuts taking place in the month of December alone; by comparison, only 301 persons were laid off by Internet companies in December 1999, according to a report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
