Vachon Enters Denim Market

For the past five years, Marc Vachon has been gaining steady momentum among Hollywood’s after-hours crowd with his unique line of faux-fur coats and Vegas-style loungewear. But the designer’s pursuit of notoriety doesn’t end there. The Los Angeles-based designer is getting ready to launch a fresh and funky line of treated and novelty-styled denim jeans and accessories for men and women.

“We wanted to produce designs that will appeal to a larger clientele,” explained Vachon, who decided last year to take his clothing in a denim direction.

With much to offer local clubgoers already, Vachon and his business partner, John Lim, said they wanted to reach beyond their milieu and create a novelty-driven market with an “urban-industrial-minded” dresser.

Novelty styling and denim treatments are not new territories for Lim, who, as owner of La Corona dye house and laundry, has been commissioned to put his own spin on denim treatments for Calvin Klein, DKNY, Earl Jean and Frankie B.

Women’s stretch hip-huggers, classic loose-fitting workmen’s pants for men, unisex button-up shirts and patch jackets, and denim shoulder bags are just some of the pieces offered in the collection. The line retails for between $30 for a pair of hip-huggers to $35 for a novelty-treated woman’s denim jacket.

Vachon’s denim line is available at Cosmos in Los Angeles; Newbury Comics in Boston; Ritz in Boulder, Colo.; Plus Living in Tempe, Ariz.; and the Marc Vachon boutique, which is located at 6907 1/2 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles. For information, call (323) 939-6332. —Claudia Figueroa
