Night and Day

Crisp suits in bold, primary colors shared the runway with sultry gowns in jewel-toned satin at a recent St. John Knits fashion show, held at the Bren Events Center on the campus of the University of California, Irvine in Orange County. The March 20 show included pieces from the design house’s Fall 2002 St. John Collection and St. John Sport lines.

Among the items on display was the signature St. John knit suit—offered in a myriad of colors and set off with such distinctive trim as mandarin collars, Chinese frog closures, fringed collars, leather, contrast piping and embroidery.

The two showcased lines’ diverse offerings also included tailored suits for day and evening and coats and jackets trimmed in fur—both natural and brightly colored. Some of the more youthful items included racing-inspired leather separates, flirty pleated skirts and an earth-toned Native American-inspired poncho. The color palette started off with patriotic red, white and blue, set off with black, then softened into teal, magenta, periwinkle, cocoa and light gray.

The Irvine-based St. John hosts runway shows twice a year for buyers and press.
