L.A. Fashion Week Fall 2002: Ndoeuml;ma

A futuristic setting of neon lights in a stark and spacious (60,000 sq. ft., to be exact) concrete loft served as the backdrop for an avant-garde showing of newcomer designer/artist Ndoeuml;ma’s Fall 2002 collection. The fashion show, titled “Transcendence,” was held at the historic Southern Pacific Building in downtown Los Angeles on April 10 and marked the official launch of the designer’s line.

Ndoeuml;ma (pronounced en-DOY-ma) featured complex and often costume-like tops, skirts and dresses with a design style she trademarks with asymmetrical silhouettes and geometric, angular shapes. Silk blouses and tops were gathered or accompanied by wrap-around collars or detachable shoulder pieces and oversized kimono-like sleeves; pearlized leather or silk asymmetrical miniskirts and cashmere “cubist” skirts came belted with an embossed leather corset, accordion belt or crocodile patent leather and bamboo belt bag; a multi-panel mid-length skirt was paired with a cashmere “abstraction top.”

Ndoeuml;ma seems to have already captured a small Hollywood following. Actresses Bai Ling (who is set to star in the upcoming films “Taxi 3” and “Kill Bill”), Chelse Swain (from “The Virgin Suicides”) and Nina Kaczorowski (featured in the upcoming film “Austin Powers 3”) as well as a few other TV actresses walked the runway in Ndoeuml;ma’s custom-made designs.
