LACMA Hosts Geisha Seminar

Author Liza Darby will discuss the art of geisha etiquette as well as the lifestyles of these traditional Japanese entertainers at a membership drive for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Costume Council on Feb. 27.

Darby, who lived for a short time in Japan as the Kyoto geisha Ichigiku, will also talk about her published works “Kimono, Fashioning Culture” and “The Tale of Murasaki.” The author is currently assisting Steven Spielberg on his movie adaptation of Arthur Golden’s novel “Memoirs of a Geisha.”

The Costume Council hosts presentations on the various aspects of costume design and textiles seven times a year, and it hosts a semi-formal tea with the guest speakers following each presentation. Previous lecturers at the Costume Council include Vogue’s European editor, Hamish Bowles, and jewelry designer Paloma Picasso.

The upcoming event will be held at 2 p.m. at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. Membership in the Costume Council is $120. For more information, call (310) 454-3040. —Claudia Figueroa
