Southern and Northern California Switch Places

Southern and Northern California have switched places—at least economically. Southern California’s manufacturing, trade and services industries are insulating it from the current recession better than the tech industry is doing for Northern California, according to a recent report by the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank. The situation was reversed during the early-1990s recession, when Southern California’s aerospace-dependent economy struggled as Northern California’s technology sector ushered in a boom time for the region.
