Most online retailers lost money last year but catalog companies with online e-commerce sites continued to post profits, helping to boost online sales 21 percent to $51.3 billion, according to the State of Retailing Online report, compiled by Shop.org, the e-commerce division of the National Retail Federation. Despite the robust growth, e-commerce represents a small portion of total retail sales—2.4 percent last year and an expected 3.2 percent this year.
