Nike Teams With Philips in Co-branding Venture

Nike Inc. is teaming with global electronics giant Philips to explore opportunities in “smart apparel,” combining Philips’ know-how in such areas as audio electronics with Nike’s sportswear expertise.

The companies will be exploring integrating audiovisual electronics into sportswear, but for the initial rollout planned for September, Nike/Philips will offer portable MP3 and MP3-CD players that are ergonomically designed for use during fitness activities.

“By partnering with Philips, we believe we can transform the sportswear, electronic and athletic industries,” said Peter Ruppe, vice president of Nike Equipment.

Philips’ Wil van den Bern said the venture “should lead to a vibrant new category of products and apparel.” —Robert McAllister
