Nygard Expanding on West Coast

Nygard International, a Toronto-based women’s apparel manufacturer, is expanding in the United States with a new distribution center set to open this summer in the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena.

The manufacturer, which markets apparel under three divisions from bridge to moderate, will open a 280,000-square-foot facility near Rosecrans and San Pedro avenues on Aug. 15. The center will be capable of shipping more than $400 million in goods annually and has a capacity that can house up to 2 million units, the company said. It also will have “slick rail” logistics capabilities to provide for GOH (Garments on Hangers) and flat-pack operation with real-time tracking.

Nygard sells to a range of retailers including Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus and Dillard’s. It has invested more than $50 million in technology, and company founder Peter Nygard said it has a “paperless mandate” with a goal of reaching total computerization. The company owns several B2B applications relating to supply-chain management, product development, merchandising and online showroom technology. About 40 percent of the company’s $500 million in sales are in the United States through traditional retail channels and through its Web site, www.nygard.com. —Robert McAllister
