Truck Stop

A lawsuit aimed at barring Mexican trucks from U.S. highways was filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco by a group of labor, environmental and trucking organizations. The suit claims that older model diesel trucks from Mexico will contribute to air pollution in smog-heavy areas including California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The plaintiffs include the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the Environmental Law Foundation, Public Citizen, the California Trucking Association and the California Labor Federation. The suit is the latest effort to deny Mexican truckers access to U.S. highways through an unrestricted border between the United States and Mexico as mandated in the North American Free Trade Agreement. One of Mexico’s trucking unions also opposes the unrestricted border, arguing that the Mexican truckers will be unable to compete with U.S. truckers, but large freight companies in both countries favor the measure.
