DuPont to Close L.A. Office

DuPont will close its Los Angeles office in the California Market Center, the building housing the California Mart, on July 31, according to Karen Eways, design segment manager for the accommodate office. Longtime DuPont employee Helen Estrada, administrative assistant for the Los Angeles office, will be leaving her position on July 31.

The Wilmington, Del.-based fiber manufacturer has had an office in the building for the past 35 years, according to Eways, who said she will either work from home or move to a small office in the area. The office houses a fabric library with samples of fabric made from DuPont fibers and contact information for fabric mills. Eways said the company will shutter the library as well.

“I find it sad that after 35 years there won’t be an office for people to frequent,” said Eways. “But we will still have a presence to help take care of customers—it will just be in a different fashion, a little more lean.”

DuPont has been streamlining its business for the past several months, announcing in April plans to lay off 2,000 workers from DuPont Textiles and Interiors (DTI), a newly formed division of the company. DuPont spun off DTI in February as a wholly owned subsidiary with plans to sell the division by the end of 2003. —Alison A. Nieder
