L.A. Fashion Week Spring '03: Alicia Lawhon

Alicia Lawhon went back to school for her Spring ’03 collection, shown at downtown art space the Poodle Parlor on Nov. 5. The designer said she was inspired by reading love poems when designing the collection— and that was evident in sweetly innocent pieces such as a sheer white dress trimmed with blue satin ribbon. But the parochial-school kilts, sleeveless lettermen’s jackets and a poodle miniskirt seemed to convey a back-to-school theme that ran through the entire show. (The designer even provided cheerleaders from John Marshall High School in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles to close the show with a cheerleader pyramid.)

Lawhon’s collection was rife with the unusual and the unique. A light-blue pullover sweater was reworked into a cardigan with a diagonal opening and crewelwork embroidery. A vintage white crinoline and cream-beaded sweater were merged into a cropped top and patched full-skirt ensemble. There were also more-traditional pieces—notably a blue A-line skirt with floral crewelwork and a white skirt and jacket with a subtle white-on-white A appliqueacute;. —Alison A. Nieder
