Hathaway Moves Away

Men’s shirt maker C.F. Hathaway Co. made the final move to shift production overseas when it shuttered its factory and laid off 235 jobs in Waterville, Me. The nation’s oldest shirt manufacturer opened its doors in Maine in 1853, but company officials said it could no longer compete with low-priced imports. Windsong Allegiance Group, which purchased the plant last year, offered to donate the equipment to any company with the means to keep operating the facility, according to the company. Hathaway has been struggling for several years and planned to close the plant earlier this year, but a lastminute $5 million order from Wal-Mart allowed the company to continue operating. And even the Made in the USA Foundation joined in the attempt to save the company by trying to secure investors to run the factory.
