L.A. in N.Y.: Tyler

Designers Richard Tyler and Erica Davies lightened up for their second collection for Tyler, Richard Tyler’s secondary line. The Spring 2003 collection, shown in an intimate space in the West Village on Sept. 21, included shades of persimmon, peach, white, lavender, fuchsia and sand.

While the sophomore collection was lighter in tone than the debut Fall collection, which stuck to more somber shades, the rock’ n’ roll theme continued to echo through the line. From the opening set to the Rolling Stones song “Some Girls,” Tyler and Davies showed a collection that was elegant without pretension.

There were well-thought details including delicate pin-tucking, raw-edged ruffles at the sleeve and neck of a simple blouse and just the right touch of embroidery on a lapel or a sleeve. The collection included a few suits, among them a tailored pantsuit in eggshell and a more casual version in washed gray pinstripe. There were also more activewear- and streetwear-inspired details, such as the zip-side pockets and baseball jacket with an embroidered eagle on the back. Despite such disparate elements, the end result was a collection of beautifully made items designed to be assembled by the wearer. —Alison N. Nieder
