Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Cynthia Vincent

Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A. marked Cynthia Vincent’s first show since she shuttered her St. Vincent line and left her Vince label. The April 2 show introduced Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, which featured the strong-but-sexy styling that the Los Angeles designer does best.

Vincent showed menswear pin-striping in curvy tailored jackets, as well as bodyskimming cargo pants. She displayed flirty minis—in pleated and micro trouser versions—and knee-grazing pencil skirts with asymmetrical hems. A zip-front trench coat came in a matte black fabric and in olive satin. The designer paired satin baseball jackets with slim-cut cargo pants bearing drawstring hems and zipper detailing. She updated the mailman pant by offering cropped versions and reworked a pair of cargo knickers in floral silk, which she then topped off with a wrapped kimono top in copper satin. The designer also ventured into menswear—showing a few understated, but masterfully tailored pieces. Notable was a pair of low-rise corduroy trousers topped with a crisp white shirt.

The showstopper, however, was the one-sleeve micro-mini dress in black jersey that closed the show. —Alison A. Nieder
