Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Magda Berliner

Designer Magda Berliner showed off her romantic side at her April 1 runway show at the Downtown Standard Hotel.

The collection, one of four sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A., employed lace, eyelets, challis floral print, laser-cut leather, sheer jersey and soft, lofty knits. The models wore short, flat-heeled boots designed by Berliner. The looks showed influences of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, but all decades were filtered through the designer’s distinctive eye.

An asymmetrical lace “church dress” with a dropped waist was worn over floralprint challis pants that gathered softly at the ankles. A mixed-media baby-doll mini dress had an empire-waist bodice made from snug elastic that had a corset effect. Even simple items had subtle feminine details. A black eyelet blouse had a sunburst pattern of darts and was worn over knee-length pants.

Berliner ended the show with a pair of “fairy” dresses—one woven, one knit. The drop-waist dresses had skirts made from petal-like layers of lace and chiffon. —Alison A. Nieder
