Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Ghost

Spectators at Ghost’s runway show on April 4 at the Downtown Standard Hotel witnessed a departure from the British label’s signature floating, feminine dresses and bias-cut gowns.

Designer Tanya Sarne showed a Fall/Winter 2003 collection filled with lots of color and exaggerated details—such as sleeves that puffed up like a bee-stung hand.

“I call it the Lego collection,” Sarne quipped, surrounded by gushing fans after her show.

Sarne did stick with her signature fabric, a garment-dyed viscose. However, in some dresses she quilted the fabric to give it texture and form.

The colors were more reminiscent of spring Easter eggs than winter. There were pinks, maroons, dark blues, purples, lavenders and reds. The collection also featured appliqueacute;d images of Bambi, mushrooms and pussycats on the backs of garments.

“London is going slightly cartoonish right now,” Sarne said. “It started last season, and we thought we would play with that.” —Deborah Belgum
