Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Grey Ant

Grant Krajecki knows how to entertain. The designer displayed his Grey Ant Fall 2003 collection at a theatrical runway show on April 3 at the Downtown Standard Hotel. The show, titled “Masters of Destiny,” was one of four events subsidized by IMG, the producers of Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A.

Friendly, pseudo-religious greeters dressed in white-hooded cloaks welcomed guests and offered show programs from small white baskets. During the show, the cloaked ones stood scattered, almost guarding aisles, and some even kept their hands in a prayer position.

That was enough to set the tone for the show, but there was more. Instead of elaborate makeup and hair, Krajecki chose glittered, oval face masks with striped designs and matching shag wigs for his models.

The clothes maintained the audience’s interest. Krajecki offered a mix of downplayed separates: cotton canvas pants, skirts and vests; cropped sweaters; fleece tops and jackets; and printed shirts. And there were plenty of Krajecki’s familiar untamed looks, including multimedia, knee-length skirts with fringe on a bias, a layered, chiffon harlequin-style top and dress, high-waisted, knit pants with glitter side stripes, and chap-style pants with diagonal fringe dangling from the knees.

Favorites were Krajecki’s tailored, button-front blazers with winged shoulders and his deep-V, knit sweaters that were fitted at the waist. —Joselle Yokogawa
