Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Nikolaki

Nick Verreos and David Paul showed a solid signature look for Nikolaki on April 2 at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. The design duo—who, season after season, have consistently shown those sexy, silk charmeuse asymmetrical and draped dresses and gowns—have done it again, proving that they still know how to make a woman look like a woman.

The designers found their inspiration in 1930s and 1940s Hollywood-starlet glamour. Slim gowns in draped silk and viscose jersey came in rich colors such as copper, bronze and Bordeaux, and some were trimmed with velvet. Brighter gowns came solid in chartreuse and in prints such as the “Tomado” print—a goldwith- burgundy splatter-like swirl—and a very colorful stripe. Ruffles cascading down shoulders, hips and backs and fishtail trains that glided against long, bare legs were flattering accents.

A few wool houndstooth pieces—a deep Vneck hunting jacket, a trench coat and a blouson jacket with silk velvet accents paired with Bordeaux-colored pants—added a sexy masculinity a la Marlene Dietrich. —Joselle Yokogawa
