Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Sue Wong

Sue Wong is known for her exotic styling, and her Fall 2003 collection—shown April 4 at the Downtown Standard Hotel during Los Angeles Fashion Week—took that reputation one notch higher.

Wong divided her collection into two categories. First, there was “Le Cabaret,” which featured jazzage, Roaring ’20s creations that included a beaded, black-and-gold embroidered slip dress with a flyaway- panel hem.

And then there was “L’Exotique,” which comprised many internationally influenced designs. Pieces such as a black-and-red embroidered Kabuki coat, a red-beaded mandarin dragon tunic and a red silk, beaded gown displayed stunning accents. A black silk kimono with hand-painted, beaded flowers was paired with black satin pants. A fur-trimmed, floral-embroidered coat with a long train added drama to a black peplum wrap top and black-and-vanilla embroidered floral pants.

Wong said her designs this Fall are meant to reflect the goddess that resides in every woman.

“There is a lot of Asian influence,” she said. “But I was also trying to make a global statement in view of what is going on with the world.” —Deborah Belgum
