Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Tree

Tree is still in its infancy. But judging fromits April 3 show at the Downtown Standard Hotel, the collection seems destined to grow.

Designers Beverly Klein and Theresa McAllen blended 1920s and 1940s styles and combined masculine and feminine looks for their Fall collection.

“We were inspired by the musical ’Cabaret,’” McAllen said. “We liked the juxtaposition of the feminine with the masculine, with the whole sexy edge to it without being too blatant.”

There were several suits and pants made of pin-striped material at the show. While many of the pants had loose-fitting legs, the corset jackets were tailored and tucked in at the waist to accentuate a woman’s curves. Lace, eyelet and ruffles added feminine touches to blouses and dresses. Skirts had asymmetrical cuts that made them swing.

The show was capped with a model sauntering out in a black silk-and-chiffon dress with layers of ruffles. Tugging on a gold lameacute; leash was Coco Diablo Chanel, the white terrier who stole the show. —Deborah Belgum
