Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Trina Turk

Trina Turk took her sweet time getting to the runway—but for those who saw her runway show on April 2 at the Downtown Standard Hotel, it was well worth the wait.

This was Turk’s first solo show in Los Angeles since she landed the California Designer of the Year award in 1998.

For her Fall 2003 showing during Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A., Turk painted the runway hot pink, which nicely set off her mostly black-and-ivory color palette. The colors she did use—most notably a bright red, a brown, an olive-and-fuchsia swirl-print corduroy and a rainbow-flecked tweed—popped against the pink backdrop.

Turk frequently draws on the early 1960s for reference, and this collection was no exception. The designer’s houndstooth cape with a matching hat and her pleated mini in fire-engine red were favorites. She also paired a three-quarter-length coat in houndstooth with cropped pants in a smaller houndstooth pattern. And she topped slim black pants with trench coat in pin-striped denim.

Turk also showed off her sense of fun with clothing rendered in a black-and-ivory “dog show” print that featured silhouettes of various breeds. She even updated the poodle skirt in a pencil version and topped it off with a black-and-ivory striped sweater. —Alison A. Nieder
