Gen Art Seeking Sassy Designers

Gen Art is looking for a few grapefruit-minded designers.

The New York–based nonprofit organization—which spotlights design talent in fashion, film and art—has teamed with the Florida Citrus Growers Association for an upcoming design competition to promote Florida Citrus Grapefruit’s new slogan, “Sass in a Glass: Florida Grapefruit Juice.”

The arts organization has issued a national call for handbag-design entries that convey the theme of the new slogan. The competition is part of grapefruit growers’ efforts to make Florida grapefruit juice fashionable, portable and appealing to stylish women between the ages of 25 and 49.

Designers must submit a bio and sketch of the handbag design, along with a look book, line sheets or photos of the current line.

Gen Art’s fashion department will select five finalists, who will each receive a $500 stipend to complete one sample of his or her Sass in a Glass design by Oct. 20. The five finalists’ work will be on display on Oct. 25 at the Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion event in Los Angeles. Attendees at the Fresh Faces event will view a video about the competition and the five finalists.

A yet-to-be-selected high-profile designer will choose one winner, who will receive a $5,000 cash prize at the Fresh Faces event. (The winner must be present.)

The deadline for the competition is Sept. 15. Each applicant must have been designing a handbag or accessories line under his or her own label for less than seven years. The contest is open to fashion students.

To enter, mail sketches, a biography, line sheets and an application to: Gen Art Los Angeles, 292 S. La Cienega Blvd. #317, Beverly Hills, Calif., 90211, Attn: Lee Trimble. Or email submissions to ltrimble@genart.org.
