Kashou, Lucero Signed for Smashbox Fashion Week

Rising star designers Rami Kashou, Eduardo Lucero, David Park and Juniper & Jasper are among the early entries for the inaugural edition of Smashbox Fashion Week, set to debut at the company’s Culver City studios Mar. 31–Apr. 3.

The independent event, produced by Smashbox principals and Max Factor heirs Dean and Davis Factor, is being positioned as an alternative to this spring’s fashion shows being produced by 7th on Sixth and sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. Smashbox’s aim is to showcase emerging talent who may not have the resources to show during the Mercedes-Benz event.

The Factors have opened up their Smashbox photo with lighting packages starting at $500.

“We’re absorbing about 90 percent of the expenses,” said Smashbox’s Sarah Haynes. “That means venue, security, parking, chairs, etc. They just bring their models.”

About a dozen designers are scheduled to show their Fall ’03 collections with about three to four shows a day, said Smashbox spokesperson Serene Cicora. A lounge area with food, drinks, music and other services will be part of the festivities. Cicora said free parking will also be included.

Haynes said the company hopes to sign remaining designers within a week or so. The company scored big in signing Lucero and Kashou, who is said to be courted by 7th on Sixth for its September shows in New York. —Robert McAllister
