Raj Finds Fountain of Youth With Contemporary Line

Swimwear maker Raj Manufacturing Inc. is hoping to make a $20 million splash with its new contemporary collection for young women called Next by Athena, which bows during the July 19–23 run of the Miami Swim Show.

Next by Athena’s hip and edgy separates line will target women between the ages of 25 and 44 who are looking for a sophisticated suit at a slightly higher price point, the company said.

Silhouettes include maillots with sexy cutouts, halter, triangle and tankini tops that can be paired with side-tie bottoms, retro briefs and belted bottoms. Embellishments such as semi-precious stones, silver hardware, embroidery and novelty treatments will be incorporated into the collection.

Raj Executive Vice President Lisa Bhathal Vogel said the line is an extension of the company’s missy collection, Athena Pick Your Fit.

“Next by Athena re-emphasizes Athena’s contemporary roots,” said Bhathal Vogel. “We are very excited about launching a true contemporary separates line.”

With wholesale price points ranging from $38 to $51, the line is aimed at better department stores such as Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor. Delivery dates begin Oct. 30.

Founded in 1967, Raj produces swimwear under the Athena Pick Your Fit, Guess? Swimwear and Guess? Collection labels. More recently, the company partnered with Irvine, Calif.-based surfwear manufacturer O’Neill Swimwear on a 61-piece Cruise 2004 line, which also bows in Miami.

The 400-employee company designs, cuts and sews swimwear at its vertical facility in Tustin, Calif.
