FLSA Fight

The National Retail Federation issued a call to the Senate to reject a proposal blocking changes to workers’ overtime rules in the Fair Labor Standards Act. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Labor suggested the FLSA rules governing overtime pay be updated with changes that would include increasing the maximum weekly pay for overtime eligibility from $155 to $425. The NRF issued a statement in support of the Department of Labor changes—although it cautioned that the new maximum might be too high for some small businesses. Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin is expected to propose an amendment prohibiting funding for the Department of Labor’s efforts to overhaul the FLSA’s overtime rules.
