Smithsonian to Feature L.A. Manufacturer

The local garment industry is going to Washington, D.C.

The Smithsonian Institution will feature a Los Angeles-based garment manufacturer in a multimedia exhibition about global transportation set to open in November.

Currently the Smithsonian Institution is deciding which Los Angeles garment manufacturer to profile, said Smithsonian spokesman Will Shurley. The California Fashion Association in Los Angeles is helping the museum make the selection.

“The whole thing is still in the planning stages,” Shurley noted.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Histor y is completely redesigning its transportation hall with a new exhibition called “America on the Move.” The exhibition will show visitors how the transportation industry shaped the history of the United States from 1876 to 1999.

The exhibition will encompass nearly 26,000 square feet on the first floor of the museum and have about 300 objects, including a Chicago Transit Authority L car and a 92-foot Southern Railway locomotive.

One multimedia display will showcase three global stories that involve Los Angeles. One story is about how clothes are designed in Los Angeles and manufactured around the world. Another is about how bluefin tuna are caught off the coast of Maine, shipped to Tokyo and then sent to Los Angeles for sushi. A third is about how toys based on American movies are manufactured in China and distributed around the world. —Deborah Belgum
