L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: As Four

There was a mad crush to get into the As Four show on Oct. 26, the opening day of Smashbox Fashion Week. But it was worth braving the crowds at Smashbox Studios in Culver City to see the New York–based fashion collective and its latest artistic, theatrical collection.

Much of the collection had a futuristic feeling with abstract shapes and silver and gold metallic fabrics. Designs were organic in feeling, with garments in shades of natural rendered in rounded blouson shapes with intricate seaming. Flowing dresses and shirts displayed draped pieces of fabric lopped together in a complex-but-organized construction. A fabulous catsuit with sequins and electric colors was a standout on the runway.

For the show’s theatrical finale, the designers sent models out in head-to-toe bodysuits that emphasized the human form. The look was dynamic as models clad in metallic pink, purple, gold, silver and black garments captured the spirit of the show by breaking out in modern dance movements. —N.J.S.
