L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: Jennifer Nicholson

The star-studded crowd at Jennifer Nicholson’s Spring/Summer 2004 show, held on Oct. 28 at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, looked like a cast party from a Hollywood movie.

Dennis Hopper was ensconced in the front row, as was Sally Kellerman. Anjelica Huston didn’t show up, but her husband, sculptor Robert Graham, did. And of course, the designer’s father, Jack Nicholson, was there, making up for missing his daughter’s New York show in Bryant Park in September.

Jennifer Nicholson is a relatively new designer. She emerged with her own label only one and a half years ago, shortly after opening her store, Mademoiselle Pearl, on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, Calif.

Nicholson’s collection was a mixture of edgy, racy styles as well as feminine ruffles and flounces. It incorporated vintage couture, avant-garde construction and unusual fabrics.

The show opened with a pink baby-doll dress done in layers of fabric. The collection had lots of bows and ruffles, as seen in a coat that had black lace on top and layers of white ruffles on the bottom. A rose-and-skull organza dress was also delicate with rows of ruffles on the skirt. Several dresses made of flowing fabric had clean lines and a sophisticated air.

“I describe it as feminine with a hard edge,” said Nicholson. “I like really fine clothing and detail and fine fabrics.” —D.B.
